Are You Listening? is an annual music festival raising funds for Reading Mencap. It takes place in Reading town centre every April across several bars, pubs, arts centres and a church. The festival aims to raise awareness and much needed funds for Reading Mencap while supporting the local music scene from the grassroots level. The festival is a partnership between Heavy Pop and Reading Mencap, and we are supported by over 70 volunteers on the day.
There were around 1,600 festival-goers at this year's festival, which took place on Saturday 22nd April. Here's what they had to say:
“Brilliant. One of those things that goes from strength to strength. A great way to discover new music and support Reading Mencap at the same time. Long may it continue!”
“AYL was a fantastic day out with a great atmosphere and great bands!”
“It's excellent value for money for a very worthy cause. And it helps raise the profile of up-and-coming local bands.”
“It was great, well organised with great bands. All that and it supports a great charity. What's not to like?”
The festival was a finalist in the Reading Cultural Awards 2017, under the ‘best festival’ category.
We can now announce that this year's event raised over £9,000! The final total will be announced after the AYL? Summer Party on 9th September at Oakford Social Club.
Thank you to all the bands and venues, and everyone who attended, donated, volunteered and supported the festival this year from all at Reading Mencap. The money raised enables us to support children and adults with learning disabilities and their families to improve their quality of life and live free from isolation and discrimination.
